Frequently Asked Questions about indexing:
Why should my book be indexed:
Think how many times you've used an index and why. Locating a specific fact in a publication is made much easier when you have an index to turn to. An index doesn't just index facts or events but also contextual relationships. Indexed books are of greater value to the user. It makes your book more accessible.
Can't software do the indexing for me?
Some software can do very basic indexing. It looks for keywords and tells you where to find them in a publication. But this type of indexing doesn't consider the context where that keyword is found. For example, the software can tell you the word "fishing" appears on pages 12 and 25 but it can't tell you that on page 12, "fishing" is referring to trout fishing, but on page 25, "fishing" refers to fishing for compliments on your fly-tying abilities. An index written by a professional indexer will make sure these "fishing episodes" are properly indexed.
Why hire an indexer? I can do it myself!
I think the Chicago Manual of Style says it best—"Although authors know better than anyone else their subject matter and the audience to whom the work is addressed, not all can look at their work through the eyes of a potential reader. Nor do many authors have the technical skills, let alone the time, necessary to prepare a good index that meets the publisher's deadline. Some authors produce excellent indexes. Others would be better to enlist the aid of a professional indexer."
